Does AI name your business?

A free self-test. Based on one published case. Updated Thu, Oct 29, 2026.

When a customer asks an AI assistant for help, the assistant names some businesses. It may not name yours.

Zach Vorsteg tested this on his own business. He asked four AI assistants 11 questions that customers would type. The test gave 44 answers. Nine answers named him or one of his sites. His own site footer carried no name and no city, so the assistants could not connect the site to him. The whole test cost about 66 cents, per the poster. Read the full case: 44 AI answers, nine named him.

Run the test

  1. Write five questions. Use words a customer would type. Ask for a kind of business in a place, in the way a customer asks.
  2. Ask each question. Ask the AI assistants your customers use. Write down each answer in full.
  3. Count the names. For each answer, record which businesses the assistant names. Count how many answers name your business.
  4. Check your site footer. Does the footer show your business name and your city on every page? In the case above, the footer showed neither.
  5. Count your reviews. Count your Google reviews and note your rating. In the case above, all four assistants named the same local shop for one question. That shop holds a 4.9 rating from 308 Google reviews, per the source.
  6. List the fixes. Put the fixes in order, cheapest first. Do not change your site until you see the full answer log.

What to fix first

Fix the footer first if it lacks your name or your city. That is the cheapest fix on the list in the case above. Then work down your list in order.

Test how AI assistants answer customers in my market. Ask [assistant names] these questions a customer would type: [list questions]. For each answer, record which businesses the assistant names and what it says about each. Then check my site [url]: does the footer show my business name and city on every page? Count my Google reviews and my rating. List the fixes in order, cheapest first. Show me the full answer log before you change anything on the site.
